For now... we’re only  5-6 months into the pandemic, just saying, we’ve all got aways to go before the virus burns itself out.

The other EU countries also have free or almost free healthcare. They however, don’t have a Boris Orangutan Johnson in charge.

Would be interesting to see the numbers as a % of the total population.

cant speak for the others....but i wouldnt call healthcare free in the netherlands...

health insurance is mandatory here and in case of shitty health i still have to pay the first 375 euros of healthcare each year...

wich admittedly...is a fucking pittance compared to the bills americans can run up

447 million for the EU

67 million for the UK

Both 2020 estimates.

It's easy to do the math. But there's no point.

Healthwise, their population is probably not all that much better off than the US, either. The UK is one of the most obese countries in Europe, although in terms of age, they’re actually somewhat on the younger side by European standards - just 18% over age 65, which is a lot lower than, say, Sweden, Germany, or Finland, and they’ve been doing pretty well. Obesity does bring a lot of comorbidities though, decreased lung capacity, high blood pressure, greater likelihood of diabetes, etc. Its why, as bad as its been in the US, I really expected us to be hit even worse than we have.

I was gonna say, that 375 Euro is barely more than my monthly premium on a relatively basic plan, before cringe-inducing deductibles and gawd knows else that isn’t covered. And I am lucky compa red to many.

It’s working pretty good in Canada...

Two provincial governments made some really poor choices. 90% of cases in Canada happened in them. Mostly in nursing homes that aren’t even part of our healthcare system.

As a C ountry of just over 30 million we’ve had 7,495 deaths total.

About 60 deaths per 100k, which is the highest in the world. It’s about double the rate in the US. Not sure what leaving the EU has to do with it, as France leads the world in mortality rate with a staggering 25%. Not sure what they’re doing over there. I recently found out Belgium like to count deaths in nursing homes all screwy, so maybe France does a similar thing.

Italy has about the same deaths per 100k people as the UK, and France has by far the highest mortality rate in the world. Politicizing disease is generally a bad idea.

I don’t know where I’d get the notion otherwise, lets recap.

Good thing they had Brexit and left that terrible EU.

So that’s

U.K. deaths are higher than the rest of the E.U.

A graph showing the above statement in figures.

and then

Reference to ‘Brexit’ and ‘that terrible E.U.’.

Yep nothing at all there, nope, nothing,

Kinja'd!!!

Somebody got burned. A little too easy?

Oh I wonder why, oh ye’, the other month my step-father fell over, the doctor put him on some pain meds, they reacted with other meds he was taking and he was virtually comatose. Took me and two paramedics to get him down the stairs, I couldn’t go into the hospital with him as the hospital wasn’t allowing anyone that didn’t need treatment in. He go tested for covid and was positive (thankfully, asymptomatic), three days before his discharge he sounds exhausted, he didn’t sleep because a guy opposite died of covid at 2-3am and it kept my step-father awake anxious of what is going on around him.

Then last Friday.

https://oppositelock.kinja.com/thatll-teach-me-for-booking-time-off-work-to-rest-1843766103

My step-father’s gall stones flair up again, again, I can’t stay with him and either have to wait in reception or go home, I chose the latter.

I get a call today to say he’s being discharged tomorrow morning.

And when he comes home he will be on a ‘pee bag’ and I’ll have to empty it and keep a record of how much is coming out, i’m on holiday at present but will be back at work the weekend after next on nights for four nights a week, what do I do with him while I’m at work for ten hours each of those nights? His gall stone operation was pushed back because all non essential operations had to make space for the virus and he’d of had it by now, but we have an operation slot, in six weeks time.

So does it boil my piss when someone makes an ignorant jab at Brexit and the virus and the Prime Minister because he thinks Brexit is a stupid idea (ye’, you and me both, because it is stupid, but what’s done is done, we can either bang on about the stupidity of it (it was a democratic vote, we are a democratic country, so the vote stands) or try and achieve the best outcome of it all , and then says he isn’t, you bet your arse it does.

The mortality rate depends on the testing, in France the policy was to stay isolated and only get tested if required which wasn’t the policy on most countries ; not to mention that we didn’t have enough tests at first (and not to mention that the first case in France might have been in November or December so it was already rampant when testings st arted ) .

The death/100k is better to compare the outcome of various countries, even if every countries are accounting those differently.

What is also important is the “curve” of deaths and not just the current “snapshot” , you can see that some countries are still not at the top of the curve like the Brazil while most European countries have decreased sensibly (more than 10 times less daily deaths than at t he peak) .

I think the US lags far behind the world in testing, and our mortality rate is still only around 5%. Maybe we have much better testing than we’re being led to believe.

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > BigBlock440
06/04/2020 at 17:04

I think they removed them from the data set because of their screwy way of counting deaths. They’re counting  people in nursing homes who die and are suspected of having Covid, without any testing, as having died of Covid. Too much high ABV beer. Unless the virus is completely out of control there, it seems this way of assuming cause of death skews the numbers quite a bit.

It’s not just the no connecti on thing, it’s that people think it’s happened. Were merely in the tran sition and negotiation stage.

That the world is going to end, that the U.K. will cease to exist, wiped from the ann als of history, never to be mentioned again.

They always have these notions that have no basis of fact in any regard whatsoever.

Aren’t they doing that in New York and several other states here too though?  They don’t have to be tested, but if it’s suspected it gets counted as covid.  I don’t know exactly what Belgium’s doing, but I’d think it’d still be comparable.

As far as I know, they’re still testing people here before counting them as a covid death. Comorbidity determinations still seem to be a bit screwy.

Looks like early April NY started counti ng that way:

https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/04/08/829506542/after-deaths-at-home-in-nyc-officials-plan-to-count-many-as-covid-19

Though it also looks like NJ used to do that, but stopped a few weeks ago:

https://www.politico.com/states/new-jersey/story/2020/05/19/new-jersey-lowers-covid-19-death-toll-at-long-term-care-facilities-by-1-400-1284565

Looks like Michigan counts suspected now, around the same time NJ stopped counting suspected.

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/michigan-changing-how-it-classifies-coronavirus-deaths-expect-tally-grow

Couldn’t find anything on Massachusetts. .

Considering those 4 states account for over half of the deaths , I don’t know why Belgium’s numbers would be any less reliable than ours. I’m trying hard to avoid thinking someone’s pushing an agenda for some reason, but it’s odd that Belgium just dropped off then the news articles started claiming “UK is highest”. I really want to think there’s a legitimate reason for it, but I haven’t dug enough to find one, and there’s not one readily apparent. And the methods between countries themselves are probably all different enough that it’s not a perfect comparison between any countries anyway.

/citation links were just the first ones found on google that definitiv ely stated if they counted suspected or not as a covid death
